MEANWHILE

Thursday, February 2nd, 2017

meanwhile_poster MEANWHILE, an exhibition curated by Aideen Quirke and featuring work by recent graduates of CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, opens at CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery on Friday 3 February 2017.

This exhibition reflects a cross-section of artists that emerged from CIT Crawford College of Art and Design in recent years who made something happen in Cork and further afield after graduating, and continue to do so. The artwork they produced, the organisations they established, the events they set in motion, however small or large, are part of the story of Cork City after the economic collapse of 2008, and how artists show resilience and determination to thrive in the face of crises and depression.

The artists included in this exhibition are Rebecca Bradley, Mark Buckeridge, Tom Doig, Christabel Geary, Gerald Heffernan, Jessie Malone, Rachel McDonnell, Frank McGrath, Kate-Bowe O’Brien, Emily O’Flynn, Aideen Quirke, and Pádraig Spillane.

This is the first of two exhibition oppportunities provided by CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery to recent graduates of CIT Crawford College of Art and Design. A call for proposals went out to graduates looking for innovative uses of the gallery space and ways of engaging with the CIT community and wider public.

MEANWHILE will run from 3 to 25 February at CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery in Cork city and is available to view Tuesday to Friday, 11am – 5pm and Saturday 12pm – 5pm.

On Saturday 25 February there will be a closing reception and panel discussion: MEANWHILE in Ireland, living and working as an artist in a post-recession age. A number of workshops and performances will take place throughout the run of the exhibition. For more information on these please click here.

CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery is delighted to be part of Perceptions 2016: The Art of Citizenship, which takes place across ten Cork City venues this September and October.

From 9 September – 29 October a diverse range of artwork will free-wheel across ten city venues, with subject matter ranging from a Beetle Circus, to television personalities Miriam O’Callaghan and Gay Byrne, buildings, love stories, machines, places, patterns large and small.

Perceptions 2016: The Art of Citizenship will showcase the artwork of over sixty artists working in supported studio settings, both nationally and internationally. The exhibition will include a screening programme featuring animations, artist profiles, and more.

This exhibition will delight visitors, while seeking to prompt a real dialogue around creativity, ability and the active role that the arts can play within our communities. It is provocative, humorous and confident. The artwork demonstrates a mastery of materials and technique that undermines easy assumptions.

Artists and organisations presenting work will be involved in public engagement events, tours and workshops with the opportunity for schools, community groups, and any members of the public to get involved. For updates see: www.perceptions2016.com, www.crawfordartgallery.ie, www.ccad-research.org/gallery.

A symposium investigating our understanding of citizenship within the unique context of the Perceptions 2016 exhibition will be held on October 25 and 26. Details of full programme and for registration: www.perceptions2016.com
