Form & Function

The Society of Cork Potters present their annual members’ exhibition at CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery from 8th – 29th of August 2015. Featuring 22 makers from all over county Cork, the exhibition will include a variety of works from functional through to decorative and sculptural.

The Society of Cork Potters is a non-profit organization, open to all ceramic artists or potters who live in Cork and who are trying to make at least part of their living by working with clay. The Society reflects the wide diversity of current creative ceramic activity in the region.
The aim of the Society is to provide a framework for Cork-based potters and ceramic artists to further their development by the exchange of ideas and information. The society organises ceramic specific networking events, workshops, and exhibitions for the benefit of its members and other invited craftspeople.
The Society was founded by a group of potters and ceramic artists working in county Cork during the 1970′s, and was affiliated to the Crafts Council of Ireland in 1980. Meetings were held on a regular basis to exchange ideas and information, and exhibitions of members’ work were organised.

Well-known ceramic artists were invited to come and show their work to members and demonstrate techniques in workshop settings. Many of these events were thrown open to other potters throughout Ireland and the society continued to meet regularly until about 1992.
Since then, many young potters have set up in Cork and are working in comparative isolation throughout the county. New and enthusiastic members are needed if the society is to continue in existence and grow to reflect the wide diversity of current creative ceramic activity.
