3 – 25 June 2016

Opening reception: Thursday, 2 June 6.30pm
Guest Speaker: Suzy O’Mullane

CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery is pleased to present PEER, an exhibition by Backwater Artists Group studio members.

PEER presents a selection of new work by 27 current studio members. The title ‘Peer’ refers to both this group studio environment, which the work originates from, and to the democratic process that was used for selecting the work for the exhibition. Each artist had a vote on all the pieces submitted for the exhibition.

The action ‘to peer’, as in looking closely whether at an object or an idea, is the basis for artists’ practice. The cross section of work in the show highlights how differently each artist moves from this point using different marks or materials in order to essentially define their place in the world.

Backwater Artists Group
Emerging from a year of uncertainty due to unforeseen funding issues, Backwater Artists Group is now back on track. Following the success of the DRAW fundraising event in April, Backwater Artists Group are happy to present a selection of new work from 27 current studio members.

B.A.G. studios were founded in 1990. Providing for over 36 artists at varying stages of their careers. It is one of the largest providers of permanent, secure, affordable studio space in the country. The group provides an annual Bursary in the form of studio space to new graduates from the CIT Crawford College of Art and Design. This is a nod to the fact that it was founded by young Crawford graduates. Artist led, with a strong emphasis on providing the stability that a secure work space can offer, it has encouraged artists to stay in Cork as well as attracting artists from other parts of Ireland and abroad.
