That means OTIF targets by lane and by SKU, quality thresholds tied to corrective-action timelines, and clear escalation paths when performance dips. They review scorecards with suppliers, but they also validate data independently through incoming inspection results, field returns, and production metrics. Second, they build redundancy intelligently. Dual sourcing is not always feasible, especially for complex tooling or regulated components, yet partial redundancy often is: alternate materials, secondary sub-suppliers for critical inputs, and pre-approved logistics routes. The goal is not to duplicate everything, it is to avoid single points of failure that can shut down the business.
Third, leaders invest in relationship depth, not just contract enforcement. Reliability improves when suppliers have visibility into forecasts, engineering changes, and quality expectations early, and when buyers are disciplined about payment terms and communication. In volatile periods, the supplier that prioritizes you is often the one that feels treated as a partner, not merely squeezed on price. That does not mean abandoning negotiation; it means balancing unit-cost pressure with the operational reality that a supplier under financial strain or constant rework cannot be reliable for long.
Finally, they professionalize the “last mile” of sourcing: pre-production samples, pilot runs, documented approvals, and routine audits, and they use local presence when it matters. When factories are thousands of kilometres away, the difference between a solved problem and a slow-motion failure can be someone on the ground who can verify capacity, inspect output, and escalate quickly. Over time, these practices compound: fewer surprises, fewer expedites, steadier production, and a supply chain that becomes a strategic asset rather than a recurring emergency.
